Welcome the Reservoir Cross Country Team 2021

First, I’d like to take a moment to Welcome you all to the Reservoir Cross Country Family.  Cross County is an excellent sport and I believe we teach so much more than running!  But we do make everyone a little better a running!

My name is Coach Phil Rogers.  I have been the program director for Cross Country and Track & Field for the last 18 years.  If you have any questions, please be sure to direct them to me!

Coach Bobby Gessler and Coach Rhys Ziemer will be returning this  year!  We have made such a great team for a number of years!  We wouldn’t be able to do all the things we do without these guys!

We want to welcome, Coach Eric Schuler!  He is Reservoir Alumni.  For Reservoir, he is currently #3 all time in the 5k, #2 all time in the 3 mile, #3 all time in the team 2 mile time trial and still holds the fastest 5k time for any Reservoir athlete at the Howard County XC Championships.  He brings a wealth of knowledge about running and training.  He has been a runner himself since middle school and continued his running career at UMBC.  Even post College you will still find Eric running around Laurel, the streets of Columbia and with the Bullseye Youth Running program!

We have a number major topics that we want to make sure you are aware of.  Please read this email and make sure you are aware of all things going on.

All runners needs to either have a watch and/or a phone.  If you are comfortable holding your phone, you can run with your phone, or you can purchase a garmin running watch.  You can search from Garmin Forerunner 25, 35, 45, 235… All of these are between $75 and $200.  You can get more expensive but all of these are good watches and will do the trick!

A portion of all sales by Reservoir on Monday, August 16th will be donated back to Reservoir.  Please be sure to state that you are with Reservoir.  All Athletes needs to take advantage of new training shoes for the season and for cross country spikes.

Schedule:  Here is the first draft of our team schedule.  I say first draft, because things may change as they relate to Covid-19 procedures or precautions.  Our Fall 2021 Schedule

Just to keep you informed, if we do not got to NC, we will have a meet on either Oct 2 or Sept 25th

Basic Team Requirements

Practice – Athletes must attend practice on a regular basis.  Any practices missed, Coach Rogers must be notified in writing.  If you miss practice, you are expected to complete the workout on your own and upload it to strava.  All athletes are required to have 21 days of supervised practice prior to their first meet.  With practice starting on August 11 and our first meet on Sept 4, athletes may only miss 2 days in order to be eligible for the first meet.

Meets – All athletes will go to every meet.  There are a few local meets where there will not be a bus, but for most of the meets, there will be a bus provided.  I will provide an itinerary a few days prior to the meet with time schedules, addresses, and a packing list.

Band Athletes– If you are in the marching band, you have Marching band camp this week.  YOU MUST LET ME KNOW.  So Far, I am aware of Casey Moquin, Claire Wang and Priscilla Ye.  On Friday August 13 and Monday August 16 you will come to our Team Practice.  You will need to return to Band Practice by 11:30am.  This way you can get home, shower, eat, and hydrate.   On Wednesday, August 18 you will go to Band Practice from 8am – 10am.  Then if you plan on attending then Beaver Dam Team Trip you may attend. For the days you do not attend Cross Country Practice, you will need to complete your run early in the morning and post them to strava. Follow the schedule I have posted for this week. These missed practices will not count against your required number of practices as these are a required school event, but you must make sure to upload your runs prior to 8:00am.

Covid Updates

At practice, as long as we are outside, masks are optional and up to every student and family.  If we go inside a school building, we are required to wear masks.  As of now, there are no restrictions on meets, practices, etc.  So we are planning on a full and complete meet and practice schedule which includes our team travel trip to NC.  If anything changes we will alert you to that ASAP and we revert to plan b.  As I have mentioned previously, I have a back up plan in case our Travel trip is not allowed.  Finally, All athletes need to bring their own water bottles.

BUS

We will have the bus for some of our meets.  I have noted which meets will have a bus and which meets will not have a bus on on the schedule above.  If student-athletes decide that they want to ride the bus, they must wear a mask.  All student-athletes may self transport, but you must arrive at the venue by the time the bus arrives.  We will handle the self-transport by signing up via a google doc.  More to come.

Donations:  Please consider making a donation to the Cross Country Program.  Every dollar donated goes right back to the student athletes.  You can access the online donation section by clicking here

We will have a spirit wear site up soon.  I’ll send that out as soon as I can.
